using perl or php to discover the version of mysql

I want to check the version of mysql and I can do that with

mysql>SELECT VERSION()

But how can I get it to return the version to the script?

SELECT VERSION() is just another SELECT query.

Use it like you would a "SELECT * FROM foo" query: connect to the server, pass the query to the server, fetch the return from the server.
