Using Apple G5 desktop OSX, CS2, system version 10.4.8 I have a problem with one function in pathfinder. When I am selecting two vector forms and try to make them one in the pathfinder menu (first icon in popmenu), Illustrator quits. When I try first to join the forms (apple J) and then make them one form in de pathfinder menu it works. But do you know what could be the error?

Allready thanks for the advice!

...are you running G5 Intel or Power PC? If on Intel there is a known issue with Illy and Rosetta running, your problem may be related, this pdf documents it on page 6:

...if on Power PC try resetting illy prefs by holding down apple+alt/option+shift on launch see if that helps...

Hey Andrew, thanks a lot for your advice. The G5 is running Power PC and I tried the resetting while launching illustrator. I think this is what you ment? But it's unfortunately not working. I hope to find another solution.

Thanks for your quick reply!

Pathfinder does some pretty intensive math. Sometimes that math befuddles the computer so much that the function fails to perform, or in a worst case, it kills the process entirely. Try offsetting one of the shapes by a hair and then run the pathfinder function again.

Hey Jimoblak, yes that's a solution, thanks for that! It's still not possible to make two quite simple forms that are filled with a color one. But for now this helps. Thanks a lot!

If you want to trash prefs on teh Mac, quit IA and go to user/library/preferences and trash "com.adobe.illustrator.plist".

Relaunch and see if that helps.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

For Intel 10.4.8 Machines may work on PowerPC:

Open Illustrator CS2, Dont open or create a document.
Close the Appearance palette (causes the crash..don't ask)
Quit out of Illustrator CS2
Restart Illustrator CS2

As long as the Appearance Palette does not open with Illustrator it will not crash.
