I have an extra license for System Works 2002. I've looked over a computer of a friend and suspect a virus or hardware problem. Their real support provider will not rebuild the system w/o them first insuring they don't have a virus. I live too far away to reformat and install for them.

I'm thinking I can give them my SW 2002, boot from the CD to check for viruses (I know those defn's are old), clean anything found, and then install Anti-V and get updated defns for another scan.

I'm trying to get around any virus that might be on their computer that would disable virus protection as it loads. I don't know a lot about security but do think that "disabling" viruses do exist.

Can you think of anything better? Are there any free virus scanners that could be downloaded (with current defns), run over a dial-up line, and not disabled when started?
