using .netrc for FTP

I need to automate some file transfers via ftp. I've gotten the .netrc file to login but I can't pass any other commands through it. I haven't found any good docs on how to do anything but login.

Any ideas?

lcd /var/log
bin
hash
put filename
bye
EOT

I got this from a co-worker for automating logfile ftps to a centralized server, so I have no idea where any documentation is on it -- sorry.
