Using ISP outgoing server

I have a qmail server setup at home on my DSL connection which is dynamic ( I used ZoneEdit ). I have never noticed any problems until now when sending mail. I cannot send to AOL accounts because AOL says "They do not accept email transactions from dynamic/residential IP addresses". I am getting a similar error message when sending mail to my sbcglobal.net account.

I guess my question is, is there a way I can set qmail up so that it uses my ISP's smtp server to send messages? This way the messages will be coming from my ISP and should then allow emails sent to AOL, etc.

In my email settings for my ISP account I have to check "My server requires authentication." and then use my name and password. I'm assuming this is "name-based authentication"?

Randy

You cannot really do named-based authentication from qmail without some fuss.

Why not just simply configure your email client software to talk directly to the ISP SMTP server for which you are configged to send via AUTH. Then have your qmail pick the mail to make the email local?

In short, just bypass qmail for outbound?

Yes, I could do that. I just wondered if there was a better way. Thanks.

Just curious, how do you do it with IP authentication?

Randy

IP authentication isn't really authentication. Your ISP would allow you to relay through their SMTP server if your IP was on their IP whitelist - generally because you're on their network space.

I have decided to tell people that I give email addresses to to use their own SMTP server. The problem I just ran into is my installation of squirrelmail. I can change the config of squirrelmail to use my ISP's SMTP server but I don't see anywhere to tell squirrelmail what my username and password are. Any ideas?

I've followed the instructions exactly on that patch but keep getting errors during patch. Have you got this to work?
