When I connect the fax to ext 17 I cannot get the HP officejet to send or receive faxes. I place any phone to this ext and it will dialout and received calls. Now after playing with it I got it to work only by placing a system phone and hooking the HP to the AUX port I can now send and received faxes. Why is this? Is there any setting I can try? hate to use a system phone to solve this problem or is there a device out there I can used instead?

Thanks
John

I have found (through past frusrations at our own office, with our own faxes) that there is a series of HPs that are not happy with the voltages put out by telephone systems. Placing a "load" on the line allows it to operate. In several cases, I've had to put a 2500 set on the line next to the HP fax to load the extension line. Swap the fax with a modem, a Panasonic/Ricoh/Xerox/Brother or other fax and it works fine. Definitely an HP problem. I don't have a clue as to why it's required, I only know that it has been a source of frustration with no other solution I've found. That's not to say a 100 ohm 1/4 watt resistor wouldn't do the same, I've just not tried it. And it's not just Partner, several other brands have the same effect. Something to do with the excitation field of an unloaded line won't allow it to "see" the line is connected.

Hi Keepontrying,
Just a thought, reverse the tip and ring connection to the fax. I know some USR modems are fussy about line polarity, the fax may be too. 392 is right though, this is the first time I have heard of this problem. It's not an Avaya fault.

I have seen this same problem - both in our office and at a job site - both times with HP all in one machines - try swapping single pair versus 2 pair line cords (i know it shouldn't matter but it cleared our problem)!
