Using Formulas By Rows and Columns

I have an Excel spreadsheet that I would like to convert to a WSS 3.0 list. Problem is that it seems you can only have formulas in columns and I need them in rows and columns. This old forum post, thread820-1438158, presented this scenario well but closed without an answer.

As a workaround, I am publishing an mht file and showing that in a web part but this is just short of meeting my need. Any other suggestions?
