Hello,

I am looking for a way to have the options in one drop down menu vary according to the option selected in another drop down menu / check box. It does not really have to be a cascading select, but at least a way to reduce the number of options in the drop down based upon previous selections made by the user.

Does anyone have a tips on this?

regards

Hi,

You can use the OFFSET function to dynamically define a range. Or you can use MS Query to return a subset of a list, based on your drop down selection as the criteria.

In either case, the structure of your data is important, so that the progressive selections can yield the desired results.

faq68-1327 describes a use of OFFEST.
has an application of the OFFSET function
faq68-5829 describes how to use MS Query in Excel.

It helps if you state what application is in question. Skip - as usual - is assuming some sort of Excel-ishness. Which, of course, MAY be correct...but if you are working with Word, then OFFSET is not going to do much for you.

So, doneirik, please try and get into the habit of telling us what application (and version) you are working with/asking about. Thanks.

Although...if people always state the application, I would not have the opportunities to tease Skip, which would make me sad.

I resemble that remark!

I would like to give fumei (Gerry) a star for his reply but that might indicate the question has been answered. The fact is we don't reliably understand the question.

Dosn't Excel revolve around the Earth, or is it the other way around? [ponder]Don't want to get excommunicated!

...sigh. Yes Skip, of course it does. Good dog.

doneirik, we also need to know what kind of "dropdown" is involved here. If it is Word (which we do not know) and they are formfield dropdowns (from the Forms toolbar), then a solution would be different from one that would work for ActiveX dropdowns (comboboxes) from the Controls toolbar.
