Hi all

I am trying to use the Erase Utility disk Version 1.70 and when I choose to erase everything I get a message saying "System is intentionally locked up. Power cycling is neccessary for all system changes to take effect. Please remove all diskette, insert SmartStart CD and Cyle the system power".
I do not have a smartstart CD, how do I unlock the system?

Thank you [Afro]

Not sure what version of system erase I've used on a 1600 but not seen that message before.
You have to do system erase from a coldstart though, not a reboot.

If you use this erase disk and then take disk out and power cycle what happens? Normally you'd get a load of error messages like 163- system options not set etc.

That is the point that the system really needs Smartstart in order to get everything configured and installed. Although you can do it with floppies I believe. I've never done it that way for two reasons. 1. I've always had access to SS cd's. 2. I'm not a masochist. :-D

Personally I think you should try and find a Smartstart v5.x or previous CD. It will make your life a whole lot easier.

My personal opinion is that System erase is only necessary if you're switching OS's say from Windows to NetWare. If you're just trying to get a clean install of what you had before, just wipe the drive and reinstall. You shouldn't need the smartstart for that.

I believe you can still also download the array manager and other management floppy disk images that you can then use to essentially do everythign you need. The smartstart just makes your life much easier.
