I recently purchased a server for our company to switch over our peer to peer network to a server client network. I am wondering what hardware/software I need to allow users with laptops to dialup to the server and use files & internet access. ie, phonelines, network cards, modems.

Thanks for any input.

If you plan on having internet access, then you could go for a xDSL connection, and set up VPN so your clients can connect by
- connection to the internet
- starting the VPN client in order to connect to the server

All of this is possible with plain Windows 2000

Obviously, your remote clients will need some sort of connection equipment as well (to connect to the internet)

Don't forget to install a firewall on your server
If you choose to use MS ISA server, then you can use it as
- firewall
- proxy server
at the same time... it works really good & really fast ! I have not failed, I just found 10000 ways that don't work

Thanks Peter, but i still have more questions. I currently have a DSL line which i plan to switch over to the server i just purchased. to get the dialup to work I assume i need a modem on the server and a detacated phone line for the server. Will this one line allow more than one person to dial into the server?

Or do i simply have the laptops dial into the DSL Number ??
To complicate things further, I currently have the fax line piggybacked on the DSL. Would this cause a problem?

if you connect your DSL to the internet, then all clients, attached to the internet, can start up a VPN connection to your server..
that way your server will only need 1 connection
(otherwise you would have to set up a RAS pool, and that's quite expensive) ---------------------------------------------------------------------
I have not failed, I've just found 10,000 ways that don't work
