Using default internet connection and providing proxy password

I want an FTP application that can connect via the default internet connection. I want this application to work under any connection scenario via the default connection. For example at present I have to authenticate to a proxy on port 8080 then connect to my ftp on port 21 providing the ftp username and passowrd. My proxy is an HTTP Proxy but how would i detect what protocol to use on another PC?
Any advice,pointers,links etc would be great.
