Using Database Links -- What does this error mean? 1

okay ... this is driving me nuts X-) ... here's the charmingly opaque oracle error message i'm getting:
ORA-02085: database link MICA_LINK.WORLD connects to MICA.MIS.*****.NET
quite honestly, that's what i thought the link is supposed to do and if so, then why the error?
i'm logging in from a client (my box) into the local and attempting to query the remote
i've established the mica service name on both the client and the local and have tested the connection successfully ... i can establish a login connection using SQL+ to both the local and the remote
has anyone had lots of experience with this?
any thoughts, tricks, things to be aware of???

I've run into this too.
Two solutions that I've found are:
Change your database link to MICA.MIS.*****.NET (probably NOT what you want to do)
OR
Set
GLOBAL_NAMES=false
in your init.ora file and bounce your instance.

You probably have GLOBAL_NAMES set to true, which requires your db link names to match the instance you're connecting to.

You're right - Oracle COULD have created a better error message. But...what else is new? [sig][/sig]

Setting the global names to false and restarting the database fixed all of my problems. Thank you.
