using css to get odd shaped rollover

Hi all,
I'm not sure if this is possible.
I'm trying to create a center image with areas (not rectangles!) that become rollover backgrounds. I will write the text links in html, but simply want the opacity of the background image to change. But I can't get out of the 'box' i.e. can I use odd shapes? I know I can create boxes with transparent sides, but then they will have to overlap... is there a simpler way?
