Using CNAMEs to access Server 03 shares via UNC

OK I've recently been asked to change our server names (long story that gets my blood boiling). Anyways, what they're really after is accessing shares via UNC using more familiar names. I figure instead of going through renaming machines, I would rather use CNAMEs instead and make my life a little easier. I've read up on this and it seems like there is all sorts of disputes about how to make this work properly. I've seen docs referring to entering registry keys to disable strict name checking or loopback or optionalnames. I'm not sure exactly which fix I'm supposed to be using. Could someone please shed some light on this topic for me?
Thank you.

You may want to look in to DFS. Access all your shares that are on multiple servers through on common link.

You need to disable the strict name checking via the regkey on the servers and then reboot the servers.

If you only want specific other names to work then setup the alternate names fix.
