using cisco 2611 & 2620

I have a need for information relating to these two routers. I started working for an isp in small town usa and the owners of the business have NO tech skills what so ever. They are just the money guys. I am the only tech and I'm just A+ certified. I know nothing of cisco routers. I can stumble around severs and do basic networking but not advanced stuff. Where do I start to get a grip on how these machines work and seting one up if need be?
They currently have a T-1 coming into the building to feed a wirles isp. This goes into a 2611 router. I would like to put the 2620 in place to optimise our whole setup. I don't even know how to get into the damn thing and then after that I'm even more lost on what step to do next! Quite a predicament huh. I've been working for these guys for a year now and just found out they know nothing of what to do if this thing goes down. Don't get me wrong I can learn very quickly and on the fly but I want to be prepared or have a backup plan at the very least. Can some one point me in the right direction.

You're not going to believe how easy this can be to acquire what you need...
Go to the website that rhymes with eday and click on buy. Then type in "cisco ios". Look for someone selling the ios version of your router. Most of these people include some extra learning materials (like the actual CCNA, CCNP and CCSP classes!!!). Let me know how it goes. Here's 2 sample links...

Just go to cisco.com , they have more info than you can read in a lifetime on how to configure all this stuff , you may have to sign up for a CCO account but a lot of it is free also.. Getting new code versions requires licenses or maintenance contracts..

I have connected to the router but thru my terminal I'm getting nothing. Just a blinking cursor.I've double checked my terminal settings with the book and all seems to be correct. Could it be there is no IOS installed so I'm looking at a blank peice of hardware?

Even if there is no image you would see it start to boot up if your emulator and settings are correct. If you are trying to use hyperterm get rid of it .Download Tera Term off the web and use that.

tera term is for older os's which i don't have on my pc. Where can I find something telling me the correct settings for hyperterminal?

I'm at my wits end. All I get in hyperterminal is a blinking cursor. Never anything showing up in the window.

What kind of cable are using between your PC and the router?

Ensure that its a Console Cable AKA Rollover cable.

BrandonSwag is correct. You can google the pinout setup. The rollover cable is an ethernet cable that has pin 1 to 8, 2 to 7, 3 to 6, 4 to 5, 5 to 4, 6 to 3, 7 to 2, and 8 to 1. The baud is supposed to be 9600, data bits at 8, parity none, stop bits 1, and flow control none. What OS is on your computer? I have used HypetTerminal with XP, one minute it's fine, the next it's screwed up. In fact, I use TERM terminal and MTTTY. Good luck. By the way, is there an ip address set on the ethernet interface yet? If so, you could telnet to it. Good luck.

I've been using a roll over cable going into a serial port adapter to connect from the console port on the router to the serial port on the pc. The pc is running xp home. All my port settings for the pc are correct and the pinouts of the cable are correct. I've tried different pc's even and all I get is a blinking cursor in my terminal window. As far as the router settings...I have no idea thats why I'm trying to get into it.

Where did you get this router from? My next thing to try would be to plug it into another cisco ethernet device and see what CDP tells you. Perhaps someone has changed the speed of the console port to perform an IOS upgrade and forgot to change it back. My next fear that is once you are able to access this router you will not have a password to login or even get into privlaged exec mode.

Like the other guys said, make sure you know what COM port you are on and double-check that in the HyperTerm config (or create a new session). Ensure you have a Cisco rollover cable and ensure that if you have an adapater that its straigh-through and not rolling it again. You can use a tool like COMInspector "

to scan the port of the Cisco to see what settings it responds to.
