I need a method whereby when i logon via a telnet session and want it to bypass the users .profile and use an alternative.

On OpenVMS, i append /command=us:[username]login1.com when entering the user name, login1.com is equivalent to the .profile or a batch file in DOS.

The reason i ask is that i have a VB application which logs on to a OpenVMS or Unix Server via Telnet and starts a process, but it needs to use a user login creditals which they also need for day to day use.

HullKR,

Putting a conditional statement at the top of the user's login file to detect the type of connection and take a specific action based on that type may work for you.

Modifying the system-wide login scripts may be another possibility. I would also take a look at the ssh ("man ssh") program and its options.
