I have had a Windows 2000 forest in place for about a year. We are a college and have a second campus located in a distant state with which we want to have a shared Exchange site - thus we need to be in the same forest. They have not yet deployed W2K/AD/Exch2K, but don't like the name of our forest. They would like us to use the ADMT to rename it. We are in native mode, and I can't find anything that details the restructuring process, and in particular whether this can be used on a W2K forest in native mode. By the way, we have an authoritative DNS server that exists outside the Windows environment, so the AD DNS naming convention is not a big deal here. We currently have the following:
Authoritatively, we are abcd.edu, they are abcde.edu
Our forest is abcd.edu, the two existing sub-domains are 1234.abcd.edu and 4321.abcd.edu. The new domain would, I believe, then be wxyz.abcd.edu, with no reference to abcde, their registered domain name. They have purchased a new domain name, ourcollegename.edu. They would like us to thus be abcd.ourcollegename.edu and abcde.ourcollegename.edu, respectively, with separate subdomains 1234.abcd.ourcollegename.edu, 4321.abcd.ourcollegename.edu, and wxyz.abcde.ourcollegename.edu. This would all exist within the confines of AD - our published addresses would remain the same.
1. Can you use ADMT in native mode, or only in mixed?
2. What are the risks/challenges in using ADMT to rename the forest? The structure of the forest would remain the same (I currently have two trees, and would add the other campus as a third tree).
3. Is there a significant benefit to renaming the forest, other than the cosmetic one?
Thanks for any assistance!
