I am new to Solaris. While using admintool(logged in as root ) to add users and trying to specify the path for home directory,I am unable to create the home directory for the user in
/export/home. The error I get is directory is owned by somebody else.

Kmat, you will have to take owner ship of the directory or change the permissions.
To change the permissions while using Common Desktop Enviroment, right click on the directory and select propities, then you change them.
I am pretty new to Solaris too, its almost like linux but still different goood luck!

Hi Sproosy, I changed the permissions to 777 for both /export and /export/home. Even though I changed the permissions it wont still let me create the home folder for a new user.(logged in as root) On working solaris systems what would be the permissions for /export and /export/home??

do you mount /export/home from another machine? is it mounted read-only? does the directory you are trying to create exist?

by the way, you don't really want the directory permissions set to 777 ...

can you do an 'ls -al /export/home/.' for us? thanks.

The permisssions are for /export
are 755 owned by root
The permissions for /export/home are also the same

drwxr-xr-x 2 root other ...........
drwxr-xr-x 3 root sys ..........

I did not want 777 to be the permissions but just to check whether it works, I tried it

The directory exists under root. I am not mounting on another machine

if you do a 'df -F ufs -k' is /export/home in it?

just checking.

if you type 'mkdir -pf /export/home/jads-home-dir' does it make a directory called 'jads-home-dir' in /export/home?

yes it exists.
I couldn't use the -f option, but I was able to create a directory in /export/home using mkdir -p /export/home/x

Just a question ( may be a stupid one) When we give the path for making the home directory for user1, do we need to specify like /export/home/user1 OR just specify /export/home

I was able to find the stupid mistake I was making, when I was specifying the path I was just typing /export/home instead of typing /export/home/"users_folder_name"

Thank your for all the help.
