using a tablet/pen - needs to be faster

I'm using an adesso tablet with illustrator cs2. I need to "redline" drawings which involves handwriting notes on a new layer. The computer can't keep up with my writing (printing). If I write in cursuf, keeping the pen down, no problem. Is this a straight up lack of ram issue or are there some pen and/or illustrator settings that would help.
