using a stored procedure as dataset

quite new to reporting services.
i am using a sp as my dataset. the report works fine and as expected when i run within the data tab. when i click on to the layout tab i dont have any fields to put on my report, tried adding a txt box with the following in
=Fields!fieldname.Value
however when i click on the preview tab i get an error saying that the field is not within my dataset.

can anyone help?

discovered if I click refresh before running the fields appear!
