Using a scanned image

Hey,

I've used Illustrator quite a bit in the past but I think it's been too long! This is a really simple question,
I've got a scanned image and I want to use just part of it. What's the best way to do this? First of all, should I just save it as jpeg and then place it in illustrator? Where do I go from there? I can't believe that I've forgotten.. Thanks!

Your best bet for manipulating a raster image would be Photoshop. Save the scan in an uncompressed format, or better yet scan directly into Photoshop. Do your thing (cropping sounds like what you're after), then save as a jpeg or any other raster format.

In Illustrator it would depend on the version of the program you are using. Fill us in on a few more details, so we can take a more deliberate stab at it.

After you have placed the pic into Illy, draw a rectangle (or whatever shape you need) over the pic. Then select both and choose Object>Cliping Mask>Make
