hey, i was wondering how i can tell the spider/bot that goes to my site to read the index.pl page as the default page...

i was gonna just put a javascript forwarder to index.pl from a index.html page, figuring the spider would read the html page first (default) and then forward to index.pl, but then i heard page forwarders are bad for SE's...

what i was doing was in my .htaccess having the line

DirectoryIndex index.pl

which will display my index.pl page as the default; will the spiders react the same way, or will they be lost?

The server will simply serve the default page to any user agent. So whatever page names are in the DirectoryIndex list will be tried in order until one is located in the folder and if index.pl is there it will be served out.

you should never link to the index page no matter what it is called. simply link to the root using href="/" or to a folder using href="/folder/". This will allow you to change server technologies or default page names with no issues.

Javascript redirects are a definite non starter for spiders as they don't trigger javascript.
