Using a Merlin 4412D phone at home?

Sorry, this may seem like a dumb question - as I deal with software and not phones. I have an extra Merlin 4412d phone, and would like to try and use it at home as a regular phone. Is that possible, or does the Merlin have to work through a business switch/router? I tried plugging it into the wall jack and noticed it didn't work. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

This requires a Merlin telephone system to work.
