Using a mailbox of a user who has left

Hi every body,
I have a manager who should use the mailbox of an employee who left the company. So for security reson I have to desactivate the mailbox of the employee (No proxy access). The archive and change the number of the user is not really a solution because every time this manager wants to use the mailbox employee(forward his message, join his message) he should unarchive. Is any body who uses a more convenient solution

I have saved all my old users using Hit the Road, it makes them very easy to access later on.
