using a css to set the background to no repeat

hi,

im trying to create a webpage for a couple buddies of mine. my problem is that when i create a new css so that the background doesnt tile (no repeat), all that appears is a stripe. i dont see the whole background, just a stripe of about 1 inch. i know it's probably something really stupid but im new to dreamweaver.

could anyone help me out with this?
