Just for fun, I'm trying to pair up a Samsung WEP 460 bluetooth headset with my laptop running Windows 7. If I can get it to work, then I can use the headset to make skype calls.

The laptop seems to be able to detect other bluetooth devices, all except the headeset. Is there some tweak I need to do to the OS to get it to detect the headset? Maybe install different protocol drivers etc. I'm not clued up on this stuff at all: more like Mr Bean who pushes a cable into a plug and expects it to work.

Only ever played once with a Blue Parrot USB headset. As I recall it required no drivers to work with XP.

When you plug the base unit into a USB port, does the operating system detect that a device has been plugged in?

Apart from selecting the appropriate device in the Sound setup, I've no further ideas at this point...

There is no base unit as such: just a bluetooth headset. I thought the laptop's bluetooth would pick it up but it doesn't.

just a dumb question, is the headset charged, I mean does it have power?

and did you turn it on?

Don't mean to make you sound like a stoop, but I've forgotten at times to turn on stuff and was looking everywhere else but at the problem's cause...

Yes, it is charged and switched on - there is a blue light when it is on. Took a while to to figure out where the on button was. The manual was pretty crap.

The phone picks it up but the laptop doesn't.

try to initiate the pairing from the laptop to the headset
some have codes that need to be entered on pairing
make sure the headset is set to discoverable

Think I'll have to look for a better manual than the 4"x2" bit in English on a piece of paper with multiple languages. Not sure how to make the headeset discoverable. The address is 0000. I'll have a grope round the web.

Looks like it is in discovery mode. I think it can only connect to phones and not to PCs.

Thanks Ben. I've been there - that's where I got the manual from. I'm just wondering if it is a different version of the Bluetooth protocol. The headset is V2.01, the two laptops I've tried are V2.0.

Anyway, my son's buggering off with the headset and I won't see it for another two weeks. I'll try again when he comes back.

No that should not be a problem at all...

I am thinking that on the PC there may be some problem that interferes with the pairing of the devices...

or that the BlueTooth dongle may not be functioning correctly in the first place...

have you tried to to connect any other BlueTooth device to the PC?

XP native support of BlueTooth was implemented beginning with SP2, but under certain circumstances you can replace the BT stack with drivers from the manufacturer...

The lapotop bluetooth picks up the phone and other laptops in the vicinity: just not the headset. I have tried both XPSP3 and w7. Blue tooth is built into the laptops: it is not a separate dongle.

I'll see if samsung have any drivers for their headset.

Finally figured it out: need to keep the button depressed on the headset until the PC discovers it. It is just a different interpretation of a few words. Woo Hoo!!!

Nice, that's something I've wondered about in the past... one day, I'll get a bluetooth headset, and will have to try this out as well. [2thumbsup]

Just FYI!

I have two Plantronic bluetooth headsets and I paired them with my Windows 7 laptop several weeks ago. I tried to use either headset for the past sseveral days and I tried turn on and off the headset and I charged the battery etc. None worked except I removed the headset from the list of devices and did the pairing again and they both are working fine.

BTW: Buy name brand headset will save you a lot of time trying to pair it. My coworker got a low cost headset and was never able to pair it.
