Hi everyone - a problem:

I have two networks: each uses a wireless router, the kind with the broadband connection, but only one actually has the has the broadband modem connected to it.

I want the other network to access broadband via the wireless capability of the routers.

Even though I have set up the routers on the same SSID and channel, they do not seem to detect each other.

I suspected it might be IP conflict - becuase the routers default themselves to 192.168.0.1: but I fixed the second router to a different IP just in case.

Am I doing something fundamentally wrong ?

Wireless Router's are not bridges. You'll need a unit capable of bridging to link wireless segments.
What product do you have? Several of the consumer vendors make these. You should stick with the same vender of your router to minimize problems. If you vender doesn't then I'd suggest replacing it all with a vendor who does.
One more note. If you can run copper between these location ..do it. Wireless should be your last resort...

Turn off DHCP on the second router, and give it a static ip in the non-DHCP range of the first router, say 192.168.0.2

Use cable and go from the LAN port of the router with modem to the uplink-LAN port of the second router.

Hello everyone - an update to this unusual router/AP problem.

I now have a DLINK Broadband router (DI624+) talking to a DLINK AP (DWL2000AP+ in CLIENT MODE). It works like a charm (as DLINK said it would) - but only if you keep data flowing across the wireless link....

If you let the data stop, then precisely five minutes after the last packet, the link is lost. This loss corresponds to an entry in the router's log as "Wireless PC Connected" and the MAC addresses of the AP (and the PC connected to the AP).

So it seems that one of the devices is sending out some kind of "heartbeat" (I do not know which one does this), but as it does so it kills the link. Surely this cannot be right?

When I say "kill", I mean that it is not possible to transfer data (e.g. PING doesn't work and more). But the log says it's connected ?!

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated - before I bin these and try another manufacturer.

Are you running XP ,seems I read there is a problem XP and wireless and there is something you need to shut off but at the moment I can't think of what it is , it should not die like that . It should stay active as long as you have your pc on .

802.1x authentication needs to be disabled on the client and routers.
