I am the assistant computer tech at a high school.

We run 100 NT4 sp6 workstations and 50 diskless (Boot-ROM) Windows 3.11 workstations from a P166 Novel 4.11 server with 196Mb RAM.

A problem has been building up and now it has become a major headache. Some Students and Staff are not able to save their work. The user gets a message that the network drive is either out of disk space or that there are too many files open. The users volume where the home directories are has 3.4Gb of space but the system and data volumes are down to about 400Mb each.

It seems to happen to a random selection of users, at first the users could log off and back on again and then could save again but now the problem seems to follow those users regardless of the workstation or operating system they are on. Most other users logged on at the same time are not affected.

Not all users are affected and I cannot find a common thread linking those affected. All users were created from the same template, have the same profiles and the same login script.

I have tried purging the deleted files from all volumes, removing all NTuser.dat files from the users directories, and removing any windows swap files from the win 3.11 users directories to no avail.

It is critical that this problem is solved soon as the senior year is in the middle of exams and not being able to save is affecting their assessments.

I have been told by the NOVEL contractor that it is definitely an Windows problem and the windows experts tell me with equal sincerity that it definitely a NOVEL problem.

I would be grateful if someone can shed light on this for me.

Cheers
Eric

Ok, do this on your server (also add to STARTUP.NCF):

SET CLIENT FILE CACHING ENABLED = OFF

You should not need a reboot. Also what SP are you running on your server? -----------------------------------------------------
"It's true, its damn true!"

Perhaps you have already solved this by now, but check this out

Do you have a size limit on the folder where users are storing stuff?
Is there a user space limit on the volume?

Lots of apps save temporary versions of files while you are working on them so if you don't have double the space available, you can't save the file. JL Filler,Wilton Public Schools, Wilton CT

Maybe you have solved this but,

What version is the service pack you are running on your netware 4.11 server. maybe it can't see all of the drive space.

what is the size of your volume on the server?
