Useradd - unable to lock password file after changing hostname

Folks, I changed the hostname of one my test boxes in /etc/hosts and /etc/sysconfig/networks after rebooting all is well but I noticed that everytime I enter the useradd command, my system hangs for a few seconds and then displays unable to lock password file.
Does anyone know how to fix this.
