I have recently added a new w2k server to the network. Upon joining a machine to the new domain, I believe a new user profile was created. Well to make a long story short, it was the President's machine. I had no idea everything would start from "scratch" I copied everything from the old profile to the new profile and thought this would suffice however: I received the following complaint:

"I am still having problems with my laptop. Specifically, my email and internet settings. It is as if what was there no longer exists. Each time I send an email I am asked to put in the address of recipients that used to be in my address book. This is problematic. Also, my mail no longer goes into the folders as they had been directed to do so. I had to delete duplicate shortcuts on my desktop. All of them were duplicated. I had to reset my earthlink connection as it no longer existed. None of my website favorites exists. I don’t have rights to rename folders in my doc. I don’t have all my clipart and sounds loaded."

Is there a way for the "new user" on the new domain to connect as the "old user" ie maintain functionality as if nothing happened?

Please help! Like I said, this is the President's machine and I am catching HELL!!

Greatly appreciate any assistance,

VAL

So you've effectively moved the machine from one doamin to another? This will mean all domain logons to this machine will create a new profile. Any profile created for user on the old doamin will still be there (if using same user id, old folder probably called 'username', new one 'username.newdomainname').

You need to copy the old profile details over the new (but if user has been using new, need to back that up, and pick up any documents/emails created since the changeover). If you go to system properties, user profile tab, does the old profile appear in the list of profiles? If it does, you can use the copy to feature to copy it over the new profile folder - change permissions appropriately. As mentioned, back up the new one first.

If it doesn't appear in profiles list, you can just do the copy using explorer (not as reliable - but usually works ok). Eg, you could just rename the new one to something else, then rename old one to new one (or delete contents of new one, after backing up, and copy contents of old one into new on). Again, make sure permissions are ok. You may still have problems (windows may still create new folder).

PS. Presume you're not using roaming profiles (if you are, you'll need to copy profile to new server and specify it in AD).
