User registration and sign in - visual studio 2005 questions

I have spent the better part of two days trying to find some direction on this. I am trying to add a simple user registration and sign in page (and then a members only page) to a website. I am trying to use visual studio but am will to try anything anyone can suggest.

Does anyone know of a good, step by step tutorial to do this? I have found one video tutorial that mentioned it but quickly went through it as thought you already knew how to do it. I downloaded a Sybex manual and it discusses securing the site with a predefined user list but I cannot find how to enable the user to register and then sign in as a member???

Any direction to a tutorial, a FAQ, a guru in Africa...whatever...would be GREATLY appreciated I am in a time crunch for two sales presentations both of which need this one thing.
