I was setting up a new computer for one of our staff yesterday. When I logged into her old computer as her, I couldn't see my flash drive in My Computer. I had to log in as administrator. Then on the new computer, I could see my flash drive , but not the CD/DVD drive when I logged in as her. Is the problem in her profile? And is there any way to fix it without renaming her profile so the server creates a new one, and then copying her files and email into the new profile?
TIA
Jill

Did you add this domain user to the local administrator account on the machine itself? Does the CD-rom show up for other user accounts, but just not hers?

Yes I made her an administrator on her machine, both the old one and the new one. The only other account on the new one is Administrator, and everything works fine logged in that way.

What about when you try a different domain account (not a local account)?

Are there any errors showing up in the event logs?

Do you get any other errors?

Have you tried removing the PC from the domain and then re-adding it from the PC itself?

Unfortunately, I'm only in that office one day a week, and can't do the testing you suggest. However, since she had a similar problem with two different computers, and when I logged in as administrator, I didn't have the problem, I'm pretty sure the problem is with her account (profile)and not with the computers. I did look at the event logs yesterday on the new computer, and there were no error messages. No, I didn't get any other errors or error messages of any kind.

If we assume it is a corrupt profile causing this, is there any way to fix it other than creating a new profile?

If you can seem to see the drive I would check disk management and see if it is showing up but there is a drive letter conflict, you may need to reassign the drive letter. I kind of doubt this is a profile problem.

Hmm I meant if you cant see the drive, sorry. Good luck!

But the thing is, I can see the drive, on both computers. She can't, on either of them. So I don't see how there can be a drive letter conflict when she's logged on, and not when I am. On two different computers. In other words, if it's not a profile problem, what would explain it following her onto a new computer?

I actually only checked disk management when I was logged on, so I don't know if she gets a different view. Mine was normal.

Next week I can try logging on as me rather than administrator, but I doubt I'll have any problem.
At least I know how to create a new profile and move her stuff over to it, but it's not much fun, and I'm hoping something easier to fix could explain it.

Group Policies?

Since profiles are usually stored on the local machine, I doubt it's a profile issue.

Group Policy sounds more likely the cause. Do any other users at the site have the same issue?

Our profiles are stored on the server, so users can log onto any machine and have their documents, etc. Also, she had never been on the new computer before, so no profile was stored there until I logged her off.

As to group policy, there are other staff with the same groups she's in, and they can see their drives. On her computer, we are both administrators, and I can see the drives. I will check her settings on the server when I'm there next week to see if I see anything unusual.

So you are using Roaming Profiles and not folder redirection I assume is what you mean? Also what you could do is get a gpresult when you login as her, see what is being applied to her user account and you could test the theory by adding your account (or some test one) to the same groups and see if the same thing happens. Good luck!

Cory

Yes, roaming profiles. How do I get a gpresult? I haven't done that before. I could change my groups to be the same as hers, as a test. My personal profile in that office is quite small- no mail, no documents, so I can log into any computer quickly.
So if I can't see anything from those, can I then assume it's her profile that's the source of the problem?

You would open a cmd prompt window enter gpresult, see the applied policies, add your account to those policies, do a gpupdate /force and maybe a restart, once you are sure you have the potential problem policies applied you could check to see if this is the problem.

Cory

I tried gpresult on my own computer and it said the user does not have RSOP data.
