user profile deletes after logout

hi on a misc. 2003 server in a domain, i login with a domain user who is not an admin.

i created a shortcut on the desktop, mapped a network drive, and "tried" to place the shortcut in the startup folder so it launches as soon as the user logs in.

however, after a logout, everything disappears - the desktop shortcut, the mapped drive, even the task bar new location (i moved it to the left.

this is not a roaming profile.
