I am changing users over to a new domain but would like to keep ALL Office settings (specifically Word and Excel) when the new user profile is created under docs and settings. Can someone please advise if there are any tools available for this and / or how I can transfer these personalised settings over.

Thanks...

Don't know about any specific tools, but for Excel at least, make sure you get:-

---------------------------------------------

personal.xls if it exists - contains any macros etc they may have stored there. Usually found somewhere around

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel\XLSTART\

---------------------------------------------

*.xlb file - is their toolbar customisation file - usually found somewhere around (Only found by viewing hidden files and folders)

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Excel

---------------------------------------------

Any *.xla - any non-standard addins they may have - usually found somewhere around (But could be in other places too)

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\AddIns\

---------------------------------------------

As long as I have that little lot backed up then I am a happy bunny.

Hi stompin,

Following Ken's line on Excel, you will need these for Word:

---------------------------------------------

normal.dot - contains all sorts of customization. Should be found in

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Templates\

---------------------------------------------

Any global templates (*.dot) - again containing all sorts of customization. Normally found somewhere around

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Word\STARTUP

But could be anywhere depending on settings in Tools > Options > File Locations > Startup

May also exist in:

(Office Installation Root Folder)\Office\Startup

(also for Excel - in ..\XLStart)

---------------------------------------------

User's pip file for personalized menus (also for Excel). Should be found in

C:\Documents and Settings\THEIR_USERID\Application Data\Microsoft\Office\

---------------------------------------------

Plus a host of registry settings - if you're not copying ntuser.dat, look at registry keys:

(HKCU)\Software\Microsoft\Office

and

(HKCU)\Software\Microsoft\VBA

Enjoy,
Tony

Cheer's for that chaps... I was thinking about copying over the entire contents of C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Application Data\Microsoft - good idea or not??

What about the C:\Documents and Settings\%username%\Local settings folder - what data / settings is held here??

Hi stompin,

Must confess I don't know where everything is stored, nor the logic involved but, amongst other things, the user's Outlook pst file and/or Outlook Express folders are stored in Local Settings - I'm not aware of any Word or Excel data there, though.

Enjoy,
Tony
