User name as "domain\username" 1

Thanks in advance for any help you can offer. On our SharePoint site there are some user names that come up as "domain\username" and some that are just "username". We would like them all to be "username".

Any ideas how to go about making this change? It seems to be just a few users. Even if I delete the user and then recreate them, the username still appears as "domain\username".

Hello,

Are you running the Portal or just Windows SharePoint services?

If you are running SharePoint Portal server check:

Site Settings -> manage Profile Database > View User Profiles. There you can set preffered name and you can just make sure that the "username" is entered there.

If you are running SharePoint services check:

Site settings -> View information about site users. There you can click on the user you want to view/change information for. Then chose edit userinformation and you will be able to edit the display name of the user.

Thank you very much Thomas for the help.

We are using the SharePoint Portal server. It seems that I can change the prefered name as you suggested in the main site. And that works. But it does not seem to apply to user accounts in team sites. When I go to manage users in team sites, I cant seem to change their prefered name.

Any ideas?

Woops. I think I found what I needed. Under the team sites, you go to "View information about site users" and there I can change the display name.
