Hello,
I have a production server with aix 5.1 .I am going to migrate the DB stuff which is in separate VG from aix 5.1 to aix 5.3 server (this is deifferent server). How do you copy the AIX user accounts and their home directories from the source to the target (= copy of production)? There are many of users and directories.

Any ideas/suggestions?

Thanks much

Make a mksysb backup of your source host. install it on the new one using tape, dvd, or a NIM server. upgrade your new box to 5.3. if your home dirs are not in rootvg then you can tar them up and move them, copy them with an nfs mount to the new host, or backup/restore with savevg ... depending on exactly where they reside.

you could also just try to copy the appropiate user files individually, but there's a chance you might miss something.

restore from mksysb is prolly the safest way to go.

The SP systems copy users accounts arround their component parts using supper. To cut a long story short you can replicate the user database by copying
[ol]
[li]/etc/passwd[/li]
[li]/etc/group[/li]
[li]/etc/security/*[/li]
[/ol]
but make sure you test this first!

copy source:

/etc/passwd
/etc/group
/etc/security/passwd
/etc/security/user

after that you can copy home dirs using either tar or rsync....
