User cals tracking

I was asked to find out how many users are using the sql server so we can plan for the cals needed,
How do I find out?

Cant really. You could do a trace on logon to record when they logon. Or you could set up a trigger fire on logon.

Neither will get you previous information however.

Will taht also report on the handheld scanners that access the sql db through telnet?

Every logon is logged if you do a trace or set up a trigger.
