The server name that my WSS 3.0 site is on is "SP01".
I installed an ssl cert in imported the cert into my workstation. When I connect to I connect to the site automatically (no banner asking for username and password).

I have changed installed a new ssl cert with "sharepoint" for the name. I changed my alternate mappings to reflect the new name. But now when I connect it always asks for the username and password.

I would really like it work the original way without any user interaction.

Thanks,

Check your settings for IIS. Make sure you have the security set correctly.

Then aren't you using anonymous access if you don't need user interaction. I'm not sure if you could do that with SSL installed.

Not anonymous access. Integrated Windows Authentication.
This is the way it was setup when my SSL was for SP01 and it used NTLM to pass credentials.
