Use the "Internet" port on WRT54G for LAN connection?

Hi Folks,

I've had no problems with my WRT54G other than original setup which took more fiddling than I'd hoped for, but that's life in the high tech world.

Now, I have the thing set as a "Router" rather than a "Gateway" and have one of the switch ports daisy-chained to a router so it's all playing nice in my LAN.

But, what I'd really like to do is hook that "Internet" port up to the router so as not to use one of the switched ports. Is this even possible?

My LAN is all 10.0.0.x stuff with the NAT and the Internet handled by existing gear (so I don't need that capability of the WRT54G). Is there any way to make use of the WRT54G's "Internet" port to connect to my router or is this a nutty idea that I should abandon?

Thanks!

John

Hi bcastner!

I figured you'd know for sure one way or another ;-)

For my own better understanding of what's going on here, could you explain why this is so? I'm not disputing your answer (as my own experience in fiddling with it led me to believe it couldn't work--at least not without some trick I didn't know). But, I would like to understand why this is.

For instance, if I wire the "Internet" port to my router, set up the Internet connection so that it has as it's gateway 10.0.0.1 (which is the address of my actual Internet router and is what all the PC's have as their gateway), and set up the DNS to correspond to my ISP's actual DNS servers, and the Internet port's address as say, 10.0.0.253, what is it about what's going on inside the WRT54G that won't allow this to function? Or am I missing something with the IP addressing or NAT side of things that's obvious to others, but not to me?

Thanks for any insight anyone might have in this regard!

John
