Use the group sum from sub report in main report chart

I have a chart on my main report and a sub report running a different query. I had to create the sub report because the queries are unrelated. The sub report has a dollars sum field for each group. I would like to use the sum for each group in the chart on the main report. Is there a way to store each group sum in a shared variable so I can call them in the main report?
