I have a remote provider of files for our web site, that traditional sent the files to my web server via FTP. Now he tells me he can only do it by SSH. I've heard of replacing Telnet with SSH, but not FTP. Is this really necessary, or even possible?

SSH has nothing to do with transfering files. That's what FTP is for. SSH is simply for secure communications.

TheOldMan346 is correct. SSH includes a secure copy function called scp. Even the windows clients include this fuctionality, although it is sometimes called SFTP in the Windows clients.

Not only is it possible, it is necessary if you would like to keep your userid/password pair out of the hands of everyone in between you and your ftp server.

Of course with all of the remote root compromises in ssh as of late, it seems like an exercise in futility. You exchange the possiblity that someone will sniff your clear-text password, for the possibility that someone will remote root your server. Not a great exchange.

P.S. - I still use ssh and scp on all of my servers. I just try like crazy to keep up with the patches.
