Use Sql Server log file for audit trail

Is it possible to use Sql Server log files to create an audit trail.

I am thinking of copying the daily log files and then storing data relative to data base changes keyed by user, date, etc (maybe before and after content) for critical files.

I can not find any threads about reading log files. Is it allowed?

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
