Hi,
My friend and me has XP Pro setup and I want to use net use command to map the remote share. My friend has set up an administrator previlege user id (administrators group) for me and I net use to his computer and connect as that user id. the system prompt me that bad username or password. why this is happened?
I have tried to use command prompt:
net use * \\friendpc\share /user:sunt <password>
and
net use * \\friendpc\share /user:friendpc\sunt <password>
and
net use * \\<ip>\share /user:sunt <password>
and
net use * \\<ip>\share /user:<ip>\sunt <password>

All prompt for bad username or password.
Of course I can ping his machine

Can anyone help?
Thanks
tony

Through the internet???????? You would certainly need to use the machine's public IP address, but this is a very bad idea.

I agree, bad idea. But if you really want to do it, you would need the public IP addres, not the PC's name.

This would be the correct syntax.

net use * \\<ip>\share /user:<ip>\sunt <password>

Try it with just the /user: switch and see if it prompts you for a password. If it does, then you should be ableto map the share. My guess is that you won't even get that far, and that the error message that you are currently getting is not accurate. More than likely this type of sharing is being blocked by a firewall or ISP on one end or the other. Do you have ICF running?

why not set up a VPN connection, it is much more secure

Does Windows XP actually support being a VPN host? I know how to set it up as a client, but...

Or use ftp instead.
