Hi. I read that certain network devices like CSU/DSUs and WIC-2Ts use serial ports. They are used on T1 and T3 lines. But would that not dramatically slow down communication and thus eliminate the purpose of purchasing a leased line? DB-25 connectors top out at 4.5 KBps on PCs. Are the Cisco serial connectors faster than that? Do they use a different pin layout? Thanks.

Different pins---they are 60 pin DCE/DTE cables. The WIC-1T is used for asynch serial, like frame relay, not T1. The WIC-1DSU-T1 is used for a T1, which uses an RJ-48, T1 cable (coming off of a smart jack, a straight ethernet cable).
