HPOV 6.2, PSOV_03184, Solaris 8.
I am using the loadhosts command pointing to my /etc/hosts to load in some items that are not able to be discovered by normal means. Specifically I have and address 10.124.50.2 associated with host SITE3. Now, this IP address actually represents a pingable address on a VPN box and is all I really need to know about the site, i.e. is it up. When I loadhosted the /etc/hosts file which has about 30 entries for this kind of location it works BUT, 1, it assigned a name of arapanet to the network, ok, this was from my /etc/networks no too bad. The problem is it ended up discovering nearly every router I have in the network again. I use Nortel routers and they have a something called a circuitless IP, an IP address assigned to the box as a whole to work with OSPF and it's also in my etc hosts files to help force a meaningful name for the routers. The loadhosts command re-discovered all of these and plugged them into the arpanet thing which isn't what I wanted, all I really wanted was to have the VPN IP addresses discovered, pinged, Green and then I'd take them and store them in a location icon on the main map. What I've done is to "hide" from this map all of the other devices which are being put into the arpanet network. My question is how do you discover just a single IP address without OV trying his best to discover every other object that might be reachable using the defaulted class A subnet mask. I tried the mask option on the loadhosts but that didn't work.
Advise is greatly appreciated.+
