use of laptop as a monitor

I need to be able to use my laptop computer as a monitor for a desktop computer. I have to be able to access some desktop computers that do not have monitors connected to them

a laptop has an external output VGA connector .
This outputs the laptop's OS .
Your suggestion would mean connecting internally in the laptop .(witch would be impossible to do in pracsis)
Why not carry around a 15 inch flat panel ..
