use laptop as screen + keyboard for desktop

Hello, I've got a (relatively) old HP Omnibook laptop. I also have a newer Shuttle SS51G desktop that is much, much faster. I would like to somehow use the laptop mouse, keyboard and screen to control the desktop directly. Is that possible? Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Do you mean that you only have the tower base for the desktop but no other peripheral and would like to substitute the laptop as a stand in for the monitor, keyboard and screen? If so, that's not possible.

Not unless you network them together and use a remote control util. like PC Anywhere or other.

He wouldn't be able to install PCAnywhere on his desktop because he has no monitor, keyboard or mouse anyways.

C'mon Steven, nothing's impossible!

I could just install VNC server on the desktop (one time with another kb/monitor) and then control the desktop with VNC client on the laptop, which I think would be the cheapest solution since it' s all behind a firewall I don't really need the security and cost of PC Anywhere.

However, I was hoping for a more direct solution, like somesort of special cabling or something...a shot in the dark it seems.

True! Although using a VNC connection would hinder the desktops performance gains since data must travel between your desktop and laptop at a max of 100 MBps but hey, you're the one using the comptuer not me.
