Base on the other threads, I'm trying remotely use a IP softphone 2050. Here is some background:
BCM50 3.0 in the office, in the firewall NAT setting: forwarding UDP 7000, UDP 28000-28511 and UDP 51000-51063 to BCM50, meantime allow traffic through all those ports to BCM in the firewall setting.
Now I can remote register a 2050, the phone come up. But when press intercom, there is no dial tone, if you call somebody, no one can hear each other.

I must miss something, could anyone give me some tips or your way to setup. Thanks.

Attempted this many times and all the same results as myself. VPN always works. I would suggest getting a VPN client for yout desktop/laptop. Otherwise, you're be working on this forever.

That is what I told customer today. Just try to find out the reason, I widely open the firewall for BCM and gave a dedicate pub IP to it, still no way voice. Frustrated! Thanks 555 for your suggestion.

You have to watch for NATs on either end of the call. The IP Phone and BCM exchange information on the IP addresses/ports which they are using and use that to send both voice and signaling packets. Public/Private IP due to a NAT will change those addresses/ports to the point where this will not work.

Thanks SD and Gweb, on i2050 side the firewall is disabled just NAT. But nothiong is configured special for 2050 in the NAT. What should I do with the NAT of i2050 side?

If you have a NAT on one end (and has to be a Cone NAT) then the two ends go through a mechanism to discover the internal/external addresses. If you have a NAT at both ends, you run into trouble.

Who doesn't use NAT these days..... :(
So guys, if I could set up both ends' port (51000s and 28000s) forwarding to the BCM and the PC running the i2050 respectively, is this gonna work?
Thanks for the reply.

It should.
No guarantee on call quality.
Any documented solution you see from Nortel always uses VPN. Of course, that may be in an effort to drive sales on their products.

Hi SD, even though I had to replace several my our customer's Nortel Contivity into other make's VPN device e.g. SnapGear... The issue with remote IP sets lost dial tone happened a lot if we use Contivitys building VPN tunnel.

Nortel published a doc called ....
"BCM50e BSR222 Secure Voice & Data For Small Businesses Teleworking Solution Technical Configuration Guide".
Has some good info, nice diagrams, etc.
Good doc. You may want to check it out.
