use cisco 1xxx series router as a voice gateway??

can I use such a device -with an new IOS- and with a BRI card as a VG?
-> models 1721, 1603
just for playing around..

As long as it runs H.323 it should work. Not sure about the BRI but it will definitely work with an FXO port. Not much BRI out there anymore.

FYI: BRI is for internal testing of some ISDN devices.
Do I need a special IOS?

Most IOS's support H.323. To be sure you should check Cisco.com to see what features your IOS supports.

But you also have to have the IOS support VoIP for the dial peers so check that also.
