Hi -

Setup: Windows XP Prof. SP1, USB2 external Drive 250gb hdd

Somehow my HDD always gets "lost" after while.

Does anybody know about this phenomen and a solution to this?

Are you saying you are running the computer off the external hard drive?

No - it is just in use for extra space and not for running the OS.

Besides it has an own power supply also.

You still haven't said which hard drive "dis-appears" - the internal, or the USB.

Sounds like the drive is being assigned a drive letter that it in use by another drive or network resource. Go into computer management (right-click My Computer and choose Manage) and click on disk manager. You can see which drive letter is trying to be assigned to the USB disk. If that drive letter is being used by something else, force WXP to assign it a letter that is available.

turn off power management to the usb port

Thx -

Tez did it ;-) The power management checkboxes for each USB-Hub have to be unchecked....
